At present, the usual way to locate paint defects is practised through reflection of light-lines on the paint surface. It is known, that this judgement is subject to strong subjective variations. These variations shall drastically be reduced through an automatic inspection check system. This system uses CCD type cameras in small design with a resolution of 400.000 pixels. A resolution of 0.1 mm demands, in consideration of line-tracking, a rotating mirror system. The results of measuring are monitored completely on-line with the help of a color-screen and a printer. In the paint repair area the workers pick up a printout of failure report thus giving information on paint defects. The presentation deals with the limits of this method and shows results of a field test. This paper has been prepared based on a field test.
