The driving forces of current development for automotive systems are less fuel consumption, less emission, increased safety and increased comfort. Efficient actuators play an essential role in reaching these targets. Among the various available actuators piezoelectric systems stand out for small size, fast response and large forces. The particular issues of small elongations and large driving voltages may be solved by tailored systems. Today piezoelectric actuators are considered for application for fuel injectors, for inlet valves, for active vibration control, for noise cancellation for pneumatic control valves and piezoelectric motors for lifting of windows and sun roof. For the future the automotive market offers a large field of application for piezoelectric actuators however substantial progress in performance is still required. The main requirements are: increased reliability, lower prices, lower driving voltage and larger deviations. This progress calls for a tight cooperation between material development, components design and system construction.
