This paper looks critically at the hydrodynamics of the NEL Oscillating Water Column Wave Energy Convertor, and in the light of recent work suggests how they could be improved. It is hypothesised that the optimum small wave energy scheme might consist of a number of widely spaced OWCs recessed in channels and set in a reflecting wall. Control of column motion offers an alternative route for cost reduction, and it is shown how one strategy ('phase control') affects the basis design of the device.
