A simple material model has been developed to predict the rolling contact fatigue life of eutectoid rail steels for water-lubricated conditions using a twin-disc rolling contact testing machine. Rolling contact fatigue life is found to be a function of the maximum hertzian contact stress, Po, the hardness, H, and HPo. The empirical relationship predicts that as the maximum hertzian contact stress increases and/or the hardness decreases, rolling contact fatigue life is reduced. The model can be modified by replacing hardness with he pearlite interlamellar spacing.
