In order to meet new environmental regulations on volatile-organic-compound (VOC) emissions from automotive painting operations, plant engineers face the challenge of selecting technically and economically feasible pollution-control processes along with sizing huge and very expensive equipment for the process. Some of the equipment and processes are so new, they are still experimental. The objective of this paper is to describe various aspects of VOC-emission control in terms of sources of VOC emissions; stack monitoring; VOC emissions from paint curing ovens; VOC emissions from paint spray booths; available equipment and processes for VOC control (i.e., incineration, carbon adsorption followed by incineration, air recirculation followed by incineration, and others); and material balance for VOC emissions.
