By means of an original patented laser welding assembly system, steel blanks are butt welded regardless of differences in their steel grades, coatings or thicknesses. The finished welded panel is called a Tailored Welded Blank. Specially distributed mechanical and metallurgical properties on a Tailored Welded Blank must meet predetermined requirements when formed as an automobile body panel. The geometry of the weld seam is of primary importance for the success of forming processes during production. A weld seam profile is charcterized by its top bead and root widths, and well as concavities, convexities and undercuts. Various techniques used to monitor weld seam profiles are described along with quality control developments.
