The current generation of higher strength micro-alloyed low-carbon steels offer an advantageous combination of high toughness and good weldability. Depending on both alloy design and plate manufacturing practice, low carbon TMCP/Q&T steel weldments are susceptible to HAZ softening. Experience indicates that weld joint efficiency of these steels rests in the interaction of yield strength and toughness. This interaction involves both HAZ and weld metal. This paper provides background information on the subject. It is concluded that information describing HAZ toughness is inconclusive with respect to joint performance because of the local difference in mechanical properties across the weld.
