Materials in the class of supertough thermosets have reached a performance ceiling wher an accurate judgement of composite toughness based on CAI properties alone is inadequate. This paper provides additional criteria which help to distinguish between composites with similar CAI properties. Damage tolerance and damage resistance are redefined more precisely. In addition interlaminar fracture toughness and Mode I/II, laminate crack propagation, CAI profiles and edge delamination strength are used to evaluate the toughness aspects of composites. The newly developed supertough epoxy matrix system Rigidite 5276/G40-800 performs at the top end of each of these categories. The mechanical evaluation on both carbon fiber tape and fabric show that this matrix can be used in primary aircraft structures at service temperatures up to 82 Cel.
