Experiences from the use of the highly alloyed stainless steel UNS S31254 for sea water piping onboard platforms are reported. The service results are extremely favourable. The only reported corrosion damage in approximately 200 km of piping and more than 20 km of heat exchanger tubing was caused by the use of type 316 welding consumables instead of the specified over alloyed filler with higher contents of chromium, nickel and molybdenum.
