In this paper, it is described on an outline of practical fatigue design of semi-submersible oil drilling rigs. The process of the fatigue design, S-N curves for the fatigue design and stress evaluation of the hot spots of the tubular joints are briefly reviewed. Practical application of fatigue design for the typical semi-submersible rig with two lower hulls and four columns is demonstrated. The stress amplitude of the welded tubular joints is calculated by use of a finite element method and is compared with an allowable stress derived from the conventional design curve. The influence of the configuration and defects of the weldments on fatigue strength is discussed. Considerations of corrosion fatigue strength into the fatigue design is also touched in brief.
