This paper addresses finish honing of remanufactured cast iron engine cylinders and the application of recently developed rectangular flexible finishing abrasives. A statement of problems remanufacturers face with finish honing and machine control limitations unique to remanufacturers is explained. Lab test data shows cylinder surface finishes free of damaging hinged burrs, sheet cover formation, torn metal, fractured base metal and increased graphite exposure to cylinder wall surfaces. Examination and evaluation of topography for cylinder bores honed with metal bond diamond and finished with rectangular flexible abrasive along with those honed in conventional fashion using vitrified abrasives.
