Historically, high part costs have limited the use of beryllium to applications where weight savings provide a big payoff, such as reduced launch costs or added payload, and to applications were the properties of beryllium are absolutely essential for system performance. Advanced powder processing and near-net-shape powder consolidation technologies have led to the introduction of new beryllium materials with superior properties for aerospace and defense applications. These technologies have made beryllium components more cost-competitive with parts made from other high-performance engineered materials as well.
