This paper examines the potential use of high temperature metal matrix composites to aerospace. The general requirement of high strength and/or stiffness to density ratio for these applications limits the selection of materials to titanium and titanium intermetallics. For some specific applications at high temperatures nickel based and refractory metal composites are of interest. Many types of reinforcement are possible for these matrixc systems and include particulates, whiskers, short and long fibres. Long fibre composites offer most promise for high performance applications. Maximising the cost-effective performance of metal matrix composites requires the appropriate selection of matrix, reinforcement and the optimisation of the matrix/reinforcement interfacial properties. This paper examines the manufacturing methods for high temperature MMCs and highlights the importance of correct interfacial engineering, to overcome many of the problems that currently limit composite performance.
