The operation of an internal combustion engine on gaseous fuel has an advantage from the stand point of pollution because of the homogeneity of the mixture. The availability of gaseous fuels allows them to be considered as an alternate fuel source. One of the limiting factors in the operation of spark ignition engine is knock. This paper presents the results of an investigation of knock in a spark ignition engine running on Ammonia and Nitrous Oxide. This mixture was selected because it contains no carbon. Hence, the products of combustion will be free of Carbon Monoxide and Carbon Dioxide. Both Ammonia and Nitrous Oxide are commercially available. The knock characteristics of Ammonia/Nitrous Oxide mixtures in a CFR engine were determined as a function of equivalence ratio and compression ratio. The engine speed and ignition timing were constant at 900 rpm and 13 deg BTDC, respectively. The gas mixture entered the engine at room conditions. Knock was sensed from measurements of cylinder pressure using a piezoelectric transducer. The intensity of knock was assessed in terms of the third derivative of cylinder pressure with crank angle, which was determined from a computer analysis of the measured signal.
