This paper outlines the initial ground work for the choice of a transmission arrangement and production approach. This general background will be supplemented with some specific examples of how Saturn derived a transmission family that exercises these fundamentals in the production of a new transmission family. The Saturn vehicle concept evolved from efforts to derive a domestically produced 'small car' that would make use of innovative design and manufacturing techniques. Within this framework a new transmission family was developed based on a reassessment of the fundamentals involving design and manufacturing.
