Replacement of multiple body panels with one piece panels brings about an accurate body, strong construction, low stamping cost and low assembling cost. But it also demands additional weight and material cost because of thickness, grade of steel, and anti-corrosion characteristic, which are determined from the most severe portions of panels. In order to solve this problem, we eveloped laser welded blanks, which are made of different sheet thicknesses or different material strengths joined together. We study the formabilities of laser welded blanks. Stretch expandability of welded joints defers from direction of force applied, and the other parallel is stretched perpendicuarly to the joint Stretch flangeability is lowered remarkably by an increase in the material strength ratio which compares the weaker one with the stronger one. Deep drawability is at the same level between uniform blanks and of the welded planks, same thickness even if they are made of different sheet strengths. We apply these results to design integrated body panels and have been mass producing them satisfactorily.
