There are several problems in manufacturing automotive body parts using coated steels; e.g. pimples, caused by peeling of coating, give poor surface quality. Also the amount of metal flow depends on the type of coating film, so adjusting the forming conditions for coated steel is more difficult than for cold-rolled steel. To prevent such problems, formabilit of coated steels must be investigated. This paper describes such an investigation, using actual dies. The relationship between the results of actual press tests and laboratory tests is discussed and an efefctive evaluation method is proposed.
