Problems associated with hot gas welding are separated into those due to the nature of the welding process and those that arise because of the properties of thermoplastics. Tensile, impact and fatigue tests have been used in conjunction with scanning electron microscopy to assess the quality of welds in sheets of three common bumper materials: PP/EPDM, PC/PBT and PBT. The benefits of using a heated roller following the welding torch are discussed. It is concluded that if gas temperatures at the torch nozzle are controlled more accurately, this technique can be used with confidence for repairing damaged car bumpers at a fraction of the cost of a replacement.
