RP (Reinforced Plastics) are attractive as alternate materials for traditionally used carbon steel or alloy tubulars for oil and gas production because of their excellent corrosion-resistant properties. In oil and gas applications, high mechanical performance properties are required for tubulars at not only ambient temperature, but also elevated temperature. Mechanical properties of RP materials at elevated temperature depend strongly on their matrix resin systems. Three matrix resin systems were selected, and mechanical properties at both ambient and elevated temperature were investigated. Mechanical properties after exposure to corrosive environments (5 % NaCl + CO2, 5 % NaCl + CO2 + H2S) were also studied. Moreover, RP pipes were filament-wound using these matrix resin systems, and tensile properties and internal pressure capabilities of those RP pipes were investigated. Test results show that both heat-resistant properties and elongation properties of matrix resin are important, and an aromatic amine cured epoxy resin system has excellent properties.
