The steam systems discussed in this paper are typical of many systems installed in the United Kingdom which feed steam at pressures ranging from 7 Bar to 18 Bar for a variety of process and heating uses. The results of the surveys show serious deficiencies with respect to adequate drainage which has a serious implication for safe operating procedures. Safe operating procedures for start-up and shut-down phases are discussed together with the implication of the Pressure Systems and Transportable Gas Containers Regulations, 1989, for such systems.
