When large stamping die pads stop on the pad keepers, the inertia of motion of the pad is suddenly dissipated, resulting in severe shock and noise. The result is rapid keeper wear, as well as broken die shoes. In extreme problem cases, the bolts that fasten the upper die to the press slide fail, permitting the upper shoe to become detached from the press. This case study shows how to solve the problem through the use of automotive pull-rod shock absorbers.
