The appearance of metallic paint finish used in the automotive industry is affected by color as well as texture of the finish. One of the factors that determines the accpetability of the finish is the degree of 'uniformity' of its texture. This paper discusses a texture analysis technique, motivated by a multi-channel filtering theory of the human visual system, to obtain quantitative measures that capture the characteristics of the texture. Two alternative schemes are proposed for grading texture uniformity based on these 'texture features'. High correlations between the resulting grades and the visual scale values assigned by trained technicians are observed.
