The development and the application of the boundary element method for vehicle noise problems are presented. Using the boundary element method, the Helmholtz equation is transformed into an integral equation and approximated to algebraic equations. A new formulation for complicated boundary conditions to solve practical noise problems is proposed. The presented approach enable us to consider the structural-acoustic coupling effect, the acoustic effect of absorbent materials and the effect of leakage through an opening. The method was applied to interior and exterior noise problems: the sound filed inside a vehicle cain was calculated and compared with experimental data; and the sound radiation from vibrating engine structures was investigated.
