The effects of quality and mechanical properties of sheet steel on stamping practice are well known. The theme of this paper is to increase awareness of some of the stamper concerns, as well as to examine the relationship between the steel supplier and the stamper as a user of the steel product. It is proposed that the two parties re-examine their positions concerning steel properties and material windows. A major new Research and Development project in metal stamping engineering is described as a new trend towards steel supplier/stamper partnership. This involves a joint undertaking by the steel makers and metal stampers with funding assistance from the Ontario Premier's Council Technology Fund. The research and development project builds on the knowledge and wisdom of industrial participants.
