Automotive industries and other metal working industries are among the many users of lasers for welding applications. Especially in the range of power levels above 10 kW laser material processing is gaining increasing acceptance. Lasers in this power range allow for both deep penetration and high speed welding. It is to great deal the latter aspect which is of particular interest for automotive production. This is because production methods are characterized by high productivity, a high degree of automation and high quality requirements. High-power laser welding performance is presented in order to indicate its favourable use in automotive production lines. Results are given for applications which clearly show the range where multikilowatt-lasers are an economic tool for laser welding.
