The automotive industry is the recognized leader in the use of laser systems in manufacturing. Although only a few lasers with more than 5 to 6 kW output power are used at present for welding it can be shown that there are welding applications in automotive production for which both technologcial and economical reasons support the employment of lasers even above the 10 kW output power range. By means of selected examples such advanded lser welding applications are discussed and laser technology in the high-power range is introduced.
