Laser beam welding is increasingly applied in automobile production e.g. in order to weld zinc-coated plates (1) as well as car frame components. This paper presents investigations which explain and demonstrate the influence which the preparation of the component (preparation of the band edges and clamping technique) and chemical composition have on the processing result as well as the mechano-technological properties of seam welds. Moreover, the results of fatigue tests are presented. These results show that on consideration of the specific characteristics and conditions, laser beam welding can also be applied in cases where high load amplitudes occur at high numbers of stresscycles.
