The current diesel engine development is mainly characterized by further optimization of fuel consumption, increases in power-to-volume ratios and consideration of emission limits. Design criterias for the corresponding injection equipment are determined from the specific engine requirements. Those demands are finally defined in a short duration of injection combined with an optimum of peak pressure in the injection system, injection curve shaping and controlled port closing independent from an open or closed loop system. Corresponding design concept on in-line injection pumps and single-cylinder injection pumps are presented in this paper. The author also considers the future development potential that should unfold as current engineering plans for in-line pumps and unit injectors are implemented for heavy-duty engines in commercial vehicles.
