The noun 'attribute' signifies first an inherent characteristic, yet also may convey the notion of an accidental quality in regard to an entity or activity. Individual coal transport modes -railroad, marine, trucking, pipeline, and conveyor - have some inherent characteristics which can be quantified in capacity and cost, and accidental qualities, which are difficult to express numerically, but nonetheless may be significant in regard to the viability of any particular coal transportation mode. In addition to individual modes, it is important to look at intermodal movements that include in-transit terminals utilized for coal storage, blending, and transloading. This paper examines attributes of individual coal transport modes under existing circumstances, as indicators of how coal transportation needs may be met during the 1990s, and thereafter.
