An aircraft is a complex repairable system consisting of a number of subsystems. They display distinct failure patterns when operating as constituents of the aircraft. Accurate characterization of subsystem failure patterns is important for analysis of aircraft reliability and availability. In the present case, field data on subsystem failures obtained from aircraft log book pertaining to a fleet of 23 trainer aircraft was utilized for realistic estimation of Weibull parameters for describing failure patterns of aircraft subsystems. It is found that the two-parameter Weibull distribution adequately describes the failure time distributions of most aircraft subsystems. The above parameters are used for evaluating aircraft reliability with the help of the discrete-event simulation technique.
