It is a very difficult task to detect damage in jacket underwater structures, especially, to determine the exact damage positions on the conditon without diving service. In this paper, the idea about establishment of a damage detection system for jacket structures by using the expert system method was proposed. According to the idea, all kinds of types and causes for jacket structural damage were analysed and a part of statistical data for damage platform were collected. The effect of some factors (such as corrosion, fatigue and strength) on the damage was discussed. The experiences for damage detection in the previous research were summed up and several methods for damage detection were valued. On the basis of the above research, the knowledge and data base for the detection system were formed. And, the pattern recognition technique was used as a main detection method, which could synthesize several vibra-detection techniqeus and one pressio-detection technique. Then, the uncertain inference was used to give a synthetical judgement for detected structures. In the meanwhile, the model experiment for data acquisition of structural damage features has been made, and a prototype of hybrid detection system DDOS (Damage Detection of Offshore Structure) has been formed, which was programmed in Prolog-i, Turbo Prolog, Fortran and Dbase-III.
