Environmental restrictions limiting emissions from vehicles will increase during the next decade. Current battery technology limits the achievable performance from electric vehicles due to the low energy storage density when compared to that of liquid hydrocarbon fuels. Fuel cells can offer an attractive alternative, in terms of their very low pollutant emissions, providing cost and physical size meet the requirements for vehicle applications. The Solid Polymer Fuel Cell (SPFC) is the most likely fuel cell technology to meet transportation requirements since it is robust, light and can achieve high volumetric power densities. Fuel conversion efficiency can be as high as 70 % under light loading conditions. The primary fuel is likely, in the first instance, to be methanol, the reformate of which will supply the fuel cell with hydrogen. Vehicle design studies have shown that it is possible to achieve a similar performance specifications to those of an I.C. engine powered small family car. This paper describes the work in progress at Loughborough University on its SPFC powered electric vehicle program. This includes the design of the SPFC stack, the fuel management system, the vehicle layout and the vehicle performance calculations.
