The purpose of this paper is to present a case study of a 'gray box' design program, done by a supplier company for an automotive manufacturer. The rate of which the design responsibility for certain jobs is being placed with outside suppliers by the automotive manufacturers is increasing. These 'black box' or 'gray box' programs have moved beyond individual parts to involve entire systems or modules. Developing specifications and test requirements also are often part of a project. Not all suppliers have the technical and financial resources to successfully execute such a complex project. The Automotive Products Group of Aeroquip Corporation does have these resources, and they were all used to complete the project described herein.
