Boeing Commercial Airplane Group (BCAG) is embracing the challenges and realizing the benefits of advanced composite applications in commercial hardware. Challenges of affordable initial and proven in-service operation costs must be met in order to take advantage of the corrosion resistance, weight, and durability benefits of fiber reinforced advanced composites in primary structure. The serice experience being gained with composites in current commercial applications and continuing technology development assure advanced composites will be implemented to larger degrees on both existing and upcoming production programs. Current technology developments include: Toughened materials offering more resistance to service-induced damage. Demonstration of both structural and economic performance of composite structure using full scale pre-production hardware. Simpler design to optimize material usage and maximize automated fabrication. Robust structures which offer simplified maintenance and repair techniques. As further service experience is established, phased implementation into primary production hardware will follow.
