Several noise and vibration problems exist in motor vehicles which are candidates for active solutions. Among these are: interior noise, power train vibrations, and exhaust noise. Recent developments in the field of active noise cancellation show promise in these areas. Descriptions of current developments are presented. In the area of interior quieting, several recent developments have indicated the promise of applying active techniques to interior 'boom' noise. Both local 'zonal' quieting systems and global noise reduction systems have been investigated. The principles of these systems are presented together with more general system design issues for active noise cancellation systems. Active vibration isolation systems have been developed to address second-order mass effects in internal combustion engines. The problem of power train vibration is especially pronounced in four cylinder engines where the disturbance occurs at twice the crankshaft rotation rate. Prototype active vibration mounts have been developed in response to this problem. Recent analytical investigations and hardware developments are presented. With respect to exhaust noise, active mufflers have been demonstrated to match the attenuation of passive mufflers while reducing exhaust flow restrictions (back pressure). Experience has been gained through experiments with prototype systems since late 1988. The principle areas of development are: fast adapting algorithms, transducer configuration and acoustic driver design. The current configuration of an operating prototype active exhaust system is presented along with empirical performance data.
