A major source of rumble noise during vehicle acceleration is due to crankshaft bending vibrations coupled with the vibration of the flywheel or crankshaft pulley. In order to suppress these vibrations, the stiffness of the crankshaft support around the main bearings and the lower part of cylinder block must be increased. This was achieved by the development of the Main Bearing Support Plate (MBSP). Power plant bending vibrations also cause booming noises in the high speed range. This problem was solved by raising the resonant frequency of the power plant bending with the development of the Integrated Stiffener (IS). The IS increased the combined stiffness of the cylinder block and the lower part of the transmission.
