Overlapping Wing Configuration is a special case of staggered bi-planer arrangement of an aircraft wings, with forward sweep given to the near wing and backward sweep given to the front wing, both joined at the tips. Conventional propulsion systems can be used for this configuration, however, considering the peculiar arrangement of the wing, the stresses, and essentially the bending moments, it is determined that the structural design of the wing may be made lighter and efficient using tapering techniques & thus minimizing the structural thickness along the normal axis. The Thrust line and power plant location on the aitcraft can also be determined keeping the peculiar wing set-up in view. In relation to the C.G. location and landing gear arrangement it becomes essential to carefully locate the power plant. The down-wash effect on the rear wing and the location of the propulsion system on the wing changes the performance characteristics of the Aircraft. Future development of the concept of Overlapping Wing Aircraft is discussed considering various power Plant/Structural integrations.
