A new high quality cast steel series has been developed. This OS steel series consists of cast steel grades having yield strengths from 340 to 690 N/mm2. The chemical composition is characterized by high purity, low carbon content, absence of microalloying and nickel additions. The increase of the yield strength up to 690 N/mm2 is achieved by changing the microstructure from ferritic to mainly lath martensitic and by applying solid solution strengthening. Achieved mechanical properties, fracture toughness and fatigue properties determined from 200 mm thick castings are excellent. Weldability was proved to be good even with higher strength grades. Cold cracking sensitivity was observed to be low and extra low inclusion content did not increase sensitivity for cold cracking. Conventional CE (IIW) carbon equivalents were not accurate inpredicting the weldability of low carbon high purity steels like OS steels. Due to the excellent material properties and welding performance of OS-540 Vaculok extra high strength cast steels can be now used in critical cast offshore components e.g., lifting points and complex model joints. The use of extra high strength cast steel results in reduction of component weight as well as reduction of welding work.
