The purpose of this paper is to outline some basic design philosophies that are applicable to the development of an application-independent dot matrix display system. Within the limitation of available spatial resolution, a dot matrix display can be used to present information in virtually any format desired. This display class represents a relatively new automotive medium in which much additional flexibility is granted to the graphics designer. The unlit display surface of a dot matrix provides no clues whatsoever with regard to system function or feature content. This application-independent characteristic should be extended to include the design of all display subsystem components to create a generic configuration of hardware and software that is impervious to changes in feature operation or behavior. Application-independence is the key to reusability and universal interfacing of dot matrix display subsystem designers. Special design rules can be applied during the development of these systems that promote the removal or localization of all application-specific components, resulting in display products that can be applied without modification to many varied applications.
