The applications of carbon fiber composites to the construction of two basic classes of tooling are highlighted in this paper. Layup molds for composite laminating operations, and jigs/fixtures/handling devices for assembly operations for metal structures are also presented. The benefits of weight reductions in both classes of tooling are discussed. Cost comparisons with conventional metal tool construction are presented. A construction method for achieving durable vacuum integrity in composite layup molds is also described.
