An evalution program was conducted to indentify welding procedure requirements for fabricating HSLA-100 steel structures. This work was performed as part of a larger program to support certification of HSLA-100 steel plate and weldments in the range of 1/4-to 2-inches-thick for use in naval ship construction. The welding processes investigated included the gas metal arc, shielded metal arc and submerged arc welding processes. Extremely high and low weld metal cooling rate conditions were evaluated by mechanical property weldments in order to identifiy the limits on achievement of satisfactory weldment properties. The welding and weldability tests of HSLA-100 were used to define tentative welding preheat/interpass temperature guidelines for each welding process based on the relative cracking suseceptibility of the weld deposits. Based on these results, fabrication guidelines for appropriate welding heat input and preheat/interpass temperatures are presented in the form of welding operational envelopes. The operating envelopes define the limits for welding heat input, preheat/interpass temperature, and plate thickness to produce weld metal cooling rates for obtained the required weld metal strength, toughness, and resistance to hydrogen cracking.
