The 4-valve per cylinder combustion system is becoming increasingly popular in its use for high specific performance passenger vehicle engines. The market place is demanding ever higher levels of refinement from the powertrain. Furthermore, fuel economy and exhaust emissions requirements are paramount for modern engines. In order to satisfy these criteria the powertrain, its control system and the vehicle must be skilfully optimised. At the heart of this powertrain is the combustion system. The paper discusses how control of the in-cylinder air motion can be utilised to optimise the combustion process for stability, fuel economy, noise and exhaust emissions without significantly impairing engine performance or engine cost. Experimental engine data and theoretical studies using Computational Fluid Dynamics are presented.
