The measurement of the velocity of a vehicle with respect to the ground has a number of advantages over the conventional 'speed' measurement by gearing from the drive shaft. Firstly, wheel slip can be detected by comparing the ground and drive shaft measurements and can be used in anti-lock braking systems. Secondly, with a measurements from each side of the vehicle, radius of steering can be calculated. This will be of use in route monitoring and guidance systems. Thirdly, if the measurements are logged in the memory of a microprocessor system the driving technique may be subsequently assessed by analysing the acceleration, braking and cornering characteristics. Following on from this it is clearly possible to analyse the parameters in the last moments before a crash in an analogous manner to that done in aircraft flight recorders. This, if the technique became widespread, would give statistical information in accident situations and may provide evidence for insurance claims. The true ground velocity of an automobile is a parameter which can be used for the detection of wheel slip, as an aid in route guidance, and as an investigative tool for driver technique and crash investigation. This paper describes an ultrasonic measurement system, based on the Doppler effect, which measures the velocity at each side of a vehicle. A difference in velocity represents a turn being made and the radius of the corner may be calculated. No modifications are required to the steering gear or power train of the vehicle.
