For small and lower medium size passenger car application the carburettor is a well established mixture formation equipment in Otto-cycle internal combustion engines. Though fuel injection technique has certain advantages it is a cost influencing factor for smaller and medium size vehicles. The authors present a microcomputer controlled carburettor system. Based on a mass production carburettor an additonal electromagnetic control actuator is attached to the system. An ECU are load and engine speed dependent informations. Additional information for environmental conditions, engine temperature regime and if required also a lambda probe can be included. The system was adopted to a small 4 cylinder 4 stroke engine. It gave fuel consumption reductions of about 10 per cent in engine test rig investigations and reductions in exhaust emissions. The system enabled the engine to run with lean mixtures. In this field investigations still continue.
