Composite materials consisting of a plastic matrix and reinforced with continuous fibres of glass, carbon or aramid have high potential for use in lightweight structures because of their high strength and stiffness at relatively low density. Although technically qualified in a number of attractive uses in automotive parts, their use in production often founders because of the absence of techniques with which an adequate number of components can be produced economically, reliably and in reproducible quality in long production runs. Laminating and press-moulding is such a technique suitable for production runs in the automotive industry. The heart of a laminating installation is a unit permitting fibre fabric or panels to be deposited in superimposed layers to build up components. The thickness can be varied over the length of the component. The laminates produced are subsequently moulded in a press and cured.
