There are increasing problems associated with the use of motor vehicles for transport. Avanced 'mechatronics' can be applied to future transport systems resulting in higher speeds, higher energy efficiency, greater safety and less pollution. In the system outlined in this paper battery powered electric cars can be driven independently on the roads or else attached to separate automatically controlled trolleys which run on a guidance track. Once on the guidance track the vehicles can be transported rapidly and safely to the exit point nearest to the vehicle desitnation. The mechatronics transport system combines all the advantages of motor cars, i.e. the ability to travel door to door in comfort with the advantages of trains, i.e.speed, safety, energy efficieny and low pollution. Once off the guidance track the cars can be driven as ordinary vehicles.
