The requirements for accelerometers in three automotive applications are discussed. These are suspension control, anti-skid braking and passive restraint deployment. Some basic design parameters common to all accelerometers are presented to illustrate that selection always involves trade-offs. The more promising accelerometer technologies for automotive applications are discussed and compared.
