During the past several years, advances in robotic finishing technologies have a prompted virtually every major aerospace firm to investigate and implement the use of robots in their spray painting processes. As a supplier of turnkey automated manufacturing systems. Ellison Robotics has developed and installed several robotic spray painting workcells in the aerospace industry (i.e. Boeing Military Airplane Company, Northrop Aircraft Division, Northrop Advanced Systems Division, General Dynamics Convair Division and Geenral Dynamics Land Systems Divison). These systems incorporate modern electric robots, environmentally controlled booths and advanced spray process control equipment. System complexity has ranged from simple stand alone units to higher-level integration with CAD/CAM, off-line programming workstations and host computers. This paper point outs the numerous recent advances in robotic spray painting technology and how this technology is being applied in aerospace today. It also comments on future trends and how changes in South Coast Air Quality Management District doctrine will impact the aerospace industry.
