This paper mainly discusses the optimisation procedure adopted in selecting the gear ratios and wheel radius of the driven wheels, for getting best fuel economy and the required performance characteristics of the vehicle suitable for the Indian road and traffic conditions. This optimisation procedure is based on the transmission system components, its role on characteristics related to the task as well as different parameters affecting fuel economy. This optimisation work has been carried out with the help of a computer, at a certain transmission system design parameters of the vehicle. The developed programmes will compute performance and economy parameters of the vehicle.
