The paper deals with test results carried out over nearly ten years at the Dept. of Energetics of the Univ. of Trieste on 4-stroke engines fueling by mixtures of diesel-oil with alcohols and coal distillates. After brief description of the main characteristics of fuels and engine used, test results concerning output, efficiency and NOx content in exhaust gas are examined. Tests have been carried out by varying engine rotation speed and load, both in aspirated and in supercharged running. As to results, output rises with coal-based mixtures in respect with alcoholic ones, the contrary occurs for efficiency: both rise with supercharging. NOx emissions increase with load and supercharging and they are higher with coal-based mixtures than with the alcoholic ones. They are particularly high with coal distillate plus additive without any diesel-oil addition.
